Uploading Documents

GeoNode allows you to upload and share a wide variety of documents that support geospatial data — such as reports, spreadsheets, presentations, images, and more. These can help give context or supplementary detail to datasets, maps, and layers.


Document Type Supported File Types
Reports .doc, .docx, .txt, .odt
Conceptual Notes .doc, .docx, .txt, .odt
Posters .pdf, .jpg, .png, .tif, .tiff
Spreadsheets .xls, .xlsx, .ods
Presentations .ppt, .pptx, .odp
Images .gif, .jpg, .png, .tif, .tiff
PDFs .pdf
Zip Files .rar, .zip, .gz
Styled Layer Descriptor (SLD) .sld
Metadata Files .xml, .qml
External URLs Web resource links (no file extension)


Step 1: Open the Upload Page

  1. From the Homepage, click the Documents tab.

  2. Then click the New button to start uploading a new document.

You can also upload documents from the All Resources page via Add Resource → Upload document.


Step 2: Select & Upload the File

  1. On the Document Upload page, click Select files....

  2. Navigate to your document (e.g. the README in the Doc folder).

  3. Click Upload.

Step 3: View & Manage the Document

Once uploaded, click View to open the Document Detail page. Here, you can:

  • Edit metadata
  • Share the link
  • Download the file
  • Delete or replace it
