Overview

To reduce disaster impact, the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement established Forecast-based Financing (FbF) systems. The Climate Centre adopted the Impact-based Forecasting (IbF) approach to map where critical impacts could be expected based on extreme event forecasts.

InaSAFE was an existing tool that combined hazard information with exposure data (e.g., OpenStreetMap) to analyse risk. This project incorporated real-time forecasts into InaSAFE, allowing users to see which people and assets were likely to be impacted by forecast events.

The goal was to support FbF roll-out by leveraging OpenStreetMap and vulnerability datasets to help people before disaster strikes.
