Course Overview

This hybrid course is designed specifically for teachers and school-level educators who want to bring geospatial thinking into their classrooms. It combines online self-paced modules with facilitated online sessions, making it accessible regardless of where you teach.

You will learn to use QGIS to create maps, work with spatial data, and digitise geographic features — and you will leave with practical, curriculum-aligned lesson resources for Grade 8, 10, and 12 Geography that you can use immediately. No prior GIS experience is needed.

Download, install, and confidently navigate QGIS — the free, open source GIS used across industry and education worldwide.

Create Classroom Maps

Produce clear, curriculum-relevant maps suitable for classroom display, assessments, and learner activities.

Desktop Digitising

Create your own spatial features by digitising from aerial images — a key skill for custom classroom resources and fieldwork preparation.

Work with Vector & Raster Data

Load, explore, and visualise both vector and raster datasets. Understand the difference and when to use each.

Course Modules

1 Getting Started with GIS & QGISOnline · Self-paced

Introduction to GIS concepts — what GIS is, why it matters in Geography education, and how QGIS works. Install QGIS, explore the interface, and load your first dataset. Includes a short orientation to the course platform and Communication Hub.

2 Working with Spatial DataOnline · Self-paced

Load and explore vector and raster data. Understand coordinate reference systems in simple terms. Source free South African datasets from OpenStreetMap, Stats SA, and other open repositories. Evaluate data quality for classroom use.

3Making Maps for the Classroom Facilitated online session

Style layers, add labels, and produce clear maps using the Print Layout manager. Learn what makes a good classroom map — design principles for learner comprehension — and export maps for printing or digital display. Live session includes Q&A and peer sharing.

4Digitising & Field Data CollectionOnline · Self-paced

Create your own geographic features by digitising from aerial images in QGIS. Introduction to field data collection using mobile tools. Practical exercise: create a simple map of your school grounds or local area.

5Curriculum-Aligned Lesson Frameworks Facilitated online session

Work through ready-made GIS lesson examples aligned to the Grade 8, 10, and 12 Geography CAPS curriculum. Discuss how to adapt these for your context, integrate them into existing lesson plans, and use GIS as an SBA tool. Participants share their own classroom ideas in a collaborative session.
